BALTIMORE -- Paul Meecham, executive director of the Seattle Symphony, has been named president and chief executive officer of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, the BSO announced Tuesday.

Meecham, 49, will start Oct. 1. He will replace interim CEO W. Gar Richlin, who took over when James Glicker resigned in January.

Meecham comes to the orchestra during a time of budget deficits, sparse attendance at many concerts and the departure of the orchestra's president, general manager and board chairman.
