Gunston , George Mason's furry green mascot who gained national prominence during last spring's NCAA tournament, has escaped scaled-back duties and again will be the Patriots' mascot this season.
"He . . . it is here to stay," university spokesman Dan Walsch said. "The decision of the university is he is very much here to stay."
After the last school year, athletic department officials said they planned to find a new primary mascot, citing concerns over Gunston's unclear identity. But others in the university community did not want to forfeit the positive publicity associated with Gunston.
The change of mascot plans was first reported in the Broadside, the school's student newspaper. Walsch said the mascot will undergo some sort of makeover -- likely a wardrobe change -- that will give Gunston "even more spice than he already has," but that its essence will not change.
"The person will be the same, like you and I are the same, we just put on a different shirt every day but we're still the same," Walsch said. "The general feeling, from what I hear from people, is that Gunston is very positively received, that people like him and it's good that we're keeping him."
