Inova Fairfax Hospital Auxiliary needs help with various functions in the hospital, but there is an acute need for assistance in the Thrift Shop at Fairfax Circle. Volunteers sort and price merchandise, stock shelves, process sales and assist customers. A time commitment of three to four hours a week is needed. Childhelp USA, a charity dedicated to preventing and treating child abuse, needs help in various positions in its advocacy center in Fairfax. Volunteer mentors provide friendship, emotional support, social experiences and career exploration to help children stay in school and out of trouble. A one-year commitment of at least two monthly meetings with a child is required. Volunteer tutors provide academic help in reading, vocabulary, math, science, history and completing homework and projects. Training is provided for all volunteers. The Annandale Christian Community for Action (ACCA) needs help with this year's CROP Walk on Oct. 21, on the trails of Lake Accotink and Wakefield Park. The 10K walk raises money to support Church World Service in hunger and refugee relief, development projects in other countries and disaster relief in the United States. Twenty-five percent of the money raised will be returned to the community to purchase fresh food for ACCA's food pantry. Guiding Eye for the Blind needs puppy raisers to provide homes for Labrador retriever puppies until they are old enough to be professionally trained as guide dogs. Training and guidance are provided by experienced local counselors. The pups need love and affection, behavior training and socialization experiences for their first 14 to 16 months.
