SICILIAN-STYLE ICE CREAM SANDWICH
Monday marked the official launch of a new ice cream sandwich in town -- one with Sicilian roots. At Moorenko's Ice Cream Cafe in McLean and Silver Spring, a luxurious scoop is now being served on locally made brioche.
Owner Susan Soorenko discovered gelato con brioche four years ago in Sicily, where the residents often eat it as a breakfast treat. She finally found the buttery, egg-rich roll she was looking for here, produced by a commercial Washington bakery. We liked the way Moorenko's amaretto ice cream, shown here, slightly melts into the bread. Maybe think brunch and beyond, not breakfast; the cafes open at noon and 11 a.m., respectively.
Sandwiches are $4.50 each, made to order from any of Moorenko's 28 to 35 flavors. At 1359 Chain Bridge Rd., McLean, 703-752-1919, and 8030 Georgia Ave., Silver Spring, 301-588-5656.
