GETTING THERE: Lewisburg is about four hours from the Beltway, traffic allowing. Take Interstate 66 west to I-81 south to I-64 west to Lewisburg, just over the West Virginia line. Amtrak serves adjacent White Sulphur Springs from Union Station for about $45 each way. Both US Airways (example: $208 via Pittsburgh in October) and Delta ($238 via Atlanta) serve Lewisburg seasonally.

EATING THERE: Downtown Lewisburg boasts several recommended dinner spots, including Julian's (highly personal Italian at 102 S.
