"To me it doesn't seem like a whole lot of purpose to put a second bridge expansion on the Nice Bridge without alleviating the congestion in Waldorf," Smith said.

Regarding the potential expansion of the bridge, Flanagan said, "These projects unfortunately take far longer than any of us would want, but let's get started."

Flanagan also updated elected officials on other projects that would affect important commuting routes for Southern Marylanders:

· Improvements to Route 210 between Indian Head and the Capital Beltway to make the road a limited-access expressway by eliminating traffic signals and constructing flyover ramps at each intersection.

· Enhancements at several intersections of Route 5, including Brandywine Road and the Beltway.

· A new interchange on Route 4 at Andrews Air Force Base.

· Expansion of the commuter bus system, adding six park-and-ride lots with a total of about 2,700 parking spaces.

· Improvements of Route 237 (Chancellors Run Road) in St. Mary's.

· Enhancements to the Route 231 corridor in Charles and Calvert counties.
