Man Pleads Guilty to Killing Father

An Ellicott City man pleaded guilty in Howard County Circuit Court yesterday to stabbing his father to death in December.

Jason Chen, 21, of the 4900 block of Webbed Foot Way initially told police he had seen his father, Yun Sen Chen, attack his mother, Lili Chen, with a steak knife Dec. 26, according to a statement of facts read by Assistant State's Attorney David A. Lank. The son told police he wrestled the knife away and killed his father, and his mother's first account agreed with that, Lank said.

But his mother said several weeks later that she had lied to protect herself and her son, Lank said. She said the fight had been between Jason Chen and his father. After Chen killed his father, he cut his mother with the knife, and she begged him to spare her life, Lank said.

A grand jury indicted Chen in January on first-degree murder and first-degree assault charges. As part of the plea agreement, prosecutors dropped the assault charge and amended the murder charge to second-degree murder, which carries a sentence of up to 30 years in prison.

He will be sentenced Dec. 8.
