Last year we were smart enough to rouse ourselves by noon on a Saturday to drop in on this little thing called Crafty Bastards , then in its second year.
We bought nothing. But we caught break dancers and chatted up young clothing designers, artists and toymakers (yes, toymakers), who have jobs and lives and yet are part of what turns out to be a cottage crafts industry -- hip D.C. creative types as prolific and entrepreneurial as any you'd find in NYC (so there). Afterward, we went home and signed up for sewing classes.
This year's fair -- as always, held by the City Paper -- is Sunday and includes performances by The Aquarium (11 a.m.) and French Toast (12:45 p.m.) in the performance pit near the Marie Reed Learning Center.
The super-sweet girls at Unsung Designers will present the Crafty Bastards Fashion Show at noon. And then there's the second annual B-Boy Battle , which begins at 3 p.m., with finals at 4:30. (If you can dance, registration for competitors is 1-2 p.m.)
It's all free. Marie Reed Learning Center, at 18th Street and Wyoming Avenue NW. 10 a.m.-5 p.m. (Get there early if you want to shop, because the good stuff runs out, as do the size smalls, it turns out). For a map and schedule: http:/
