Columbia Man Hangs Himself in Custody

A Columbia man charged with rape and assault apparently killed himself Wednesday night while he was being held in the Howard County Detention Center, a county police spokeswoman said.

Investigators said that Vaughn Hairston, 24, hanged himself with a bedsheet, according to Sherry Llewellyn, the spokeswoman. Llewellyn said that there was no indication of foul play. Hairston was taken to Howard County General Hospital shortly before 2:30 p.m. and was then flown by helicopter to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center, where he died at 11:15 p.m.

Hairston was sent to the detention center March 15 on charges of second-degree rape, second-degree assault and malicious destruction of property. Llewellyn said Hairston's death is under investigation.

Slain Dentist Died of 'Extreme Force'

A 51-year-old dentist found dead in his Glen Burnie office was killed by "extreme force" that caused multiple injuries to his upper body, Anne Arundel County police said.

The state medical examiner's office determined that Albert Woonho Ro, an apparent homicide victim, died of blunt force trauma, Officer Sara Schriver said yesterday. "Something with extreme force traumatized his upper body," Schriver said. "As far as weapon-wise, we're not ready to release that."

Ro, a Hanover resident, was found by police in his office at 1414 Crain Hwy. late Tuesday after they were contacted by the victim's wife, who became concerned when she was unable to contact her husband, police said.
