JUANA MOLINA -- Today at 8:30 p.m. Though known as a comic television actress in her native Argentina, Molina's intimate, atmospheric songs never come off as a celebrity vanity project. Instead, they recall contemporary singer-songwriters such as Beth Orton. Iota Club & Cafe, 2832 Wilson Blvd., Arlington. $15. 703-522-8340.
LIZ CARLISLE -- See Can't Miss, this page.
BUILT TO SPILL -- Monday and Tuesday, doors at 7:30 p.m. The indie-rock darlings are known for their experimental song structures and guitar heroics. 9:30 club, 815 V St. NW. $20. 202-265-0930.
AARON NEVILLE AND HIS QUINTET -- Monday at 8 p.m. The soul legend presents a collection of classics with brother Charles Neville. Rams Head Tavern, 33 West St., Annapolis. $69.50. 410-268-4545.
RANDY NEWMAN -- Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. Though he had a successful career in the '70s and '80s as a singer-songwriter, Newman is now best known for the Oscar- and Grammy-winning tunes he penned for movies and television shows such as "Toy Story" and "Monk." Birchmere, 3701 Mount Vernon Ave., Alexandria. $65. 703-549-7500 or 703-573-7328.
SPARTA -- Tuesday at 8:30 p.m. After At the Drive-In split, Jim Ward, Paul Hinojos and Tony Hajjar began making post-hard-core mood-rock under the moniker Sparta. Keeley Davis of Engine Down replaced Hinojos, but the band continues to make dark, brooding rock. Black Cat, 1811 14th St. NW. $15. 202-667-7960.
SERGIO MENDES -- Thursday, doors at 6 p.m. The best-selling Brazilian recording artist of all time hadn't released an album in nearly a decade, so it was easy to assume that his career was winding down. Then came this year's "Timeless," proving that Mendes is as relevant as ever. Teaming up with Will.I.Am of the Black Eyed Peas, he has recast many of his classic tunes with a contemporary beat, calling in assists from the likes of Q-Tip, Justin Timberlake, John Legend, Jill Scott, Black Thought and Stevie Wonder. 9:30 club, 815 V St. NW. $40. 202-265-0930.
DMX -- Thursday, doors at 10:30 p.m. His recent album isn't getting a lot of positive attention, but DMX is still a powerful live performer. 9:30 club, 815 V St. NW. $25. 202-265-0930.
JAMES BLUNT -- Friday at 6:30 p.m. The adult-contemporary ladies' man is still riding the success of his single "You're Beautiful." Merriweather Post Pavilion, 10475 Little Patuxent Pkwy., Columbia. $29.50-$49.50. 202-397-7328 or 301-596-0660.
