SUZUKA, Japan -- Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel won the pole position for the Japanese Grand Prix on Sunday in qualifying delayed Saturday because of rain.
Vettel, the race winner last year, shared the front row on the grid for the race later Sunday with Red Bull teammate and championship leader Mark Webber.
McLaren's Lewis Hamilton was third fastest, but was dropped to eighth after he was penalized for changing his car's gearbox. Renault's Robert Kubica qualified third, and Ferrari's Fernando Alonso was fourth.
Heavy rain Saturday forced officials to postpone qualifying to Sunday. The track was still partially wet from the downpour, but had dried off considerably by the end of qualifying.
