ARUNDEL: The Wildcats' Anthony Gunn ran for 192 yards and three touchdowns on 10 carries Monday -- including a 99-yard scamper -- in a 52-15 football win over Northeast. Brandon Johnson-Farrell added two touchdowns on a 66-yard run and a 16-yard reception for Arundel. The Wildcats improved to 4-1 and sit atop the Anne Arundel County 4A standings. Northeast fell to 0-5.
CHANTILLY: Senior guard Ben Wheeler has orally committed to play basketball for Lafayette, Chargers Coach Jim Smith said last week. The 6-foot-4 Wheeler averaged 17 points and four assists last season.
GLENELG: The Gladiators won the Howard County golf tournament Thursday with a 10-stroke victory over undefeated regular season champion Centennial at the Timbers at Troy. Glenelg's Matt Philie and Cody Dillon both earned medals as top 5 finishers. Donnie Shin of Oakland Mills won the boys' individual title and Mount Hebron's Suh Hwang won the girls' title. On Monday, Glenelg advanced to the state tournament at the University of Maryland on Oct. 24 by posting a 321 in the District 5 championship at Eisenhower Golf Course. Philie carded a 1-over-par 72 to lead the Gladiators.
MARET: The Frogs' football team is off to a 4-1 start after winning just three games the previous two seasons. Maret is 2-0 in the Mid-Atlantic Conference, where it hadn't won a game in four seasons.
MARSHALL: Senior center Maya Al-Shingieti orally committed to play basketball for the New Jersey Institute of Technology, which is moving up to NCAA Division I this winter. The 6-foot-2 Al-Shingieti averaged 7.5 points and seven rebounds per game for the Statesmen last season.
OAKCREST: The Chargers' cross-country team successfully defended its title at the nine-team PVAC Midseason Challenge meet Oct. 4 by sweeping the top five spots. Sophomore Grace Gilday finished first with a time of 22 minutes 43 seconds, followed by junior Elise Krohn (24:08), freshman Eileen Kuzma (24:09), sophomore Ann Marie McPherson (25:40) and junior Claire Wahle (26:54). The team combined for the low score of 51.
ROCKVILLE: The boys' golf team won the Kohut Division and 2A/1A District title and qualified for the state tournament -- the first time in Rams history they have done all three in a single season.
ST. ALBANS: The Bulldogs' cross-country team captured the small-schools division of the Salesianum Invitational in Wilmington, Del., on Saturday. St. Albans scored 71 points to place 17 points ahead of second-place Tatnall (Del.). Junior Nick Bax was the individual winner in 17 minutes 10 seconds, placing first in an invitational for the second consecutive week (he also won in Mercersburg, Pa., last week) and for the third time this year. Junior Brian Rooney placed third.
