The following organizations need volunteer help for a day, for a week or on a regular basis.

Reston Community Center has volunteer opportunities in several areas. The Clubhouse Program at Terraset Elementary School needs volunteer tutors to help children 7 to 11 with homework. Volunteers are needed to work at the Halloween Family Fun Day for two-hour shifts, between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Oct. 28. AARP Tax-Aide , a volunteer-run tax counseling and preparation service, needs volunteers to electronically complete and file 2006 federal and state income tax returns. Ability to use a computer is required. Evening and Saturday shifts are available. All volunteers become IRS certified by passing the IRS examination. Free training is provided. The Women's Center -- a nonprofit agency in Vienna that supports the psychological, career, financial and legal well-being of women and their families, regardless of ability to pay -- has volunteer opportunities in business operations, development, clinical services and its golf tournament. 703-281-2657, http://www.thewomenscenter.org .

The Literacy Council of Northern Virginia needs tutors to help adults learn to speak, understand, read and write English. Tutors are trained, matched with a student and encouraged to meet the student weekly for an hour and a half. No teaching or foreign-language skills are required. Training workshops are 9:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Saturday and Oct. 21 and 28 at the James Lee Community Center, 2855 Annandale Rd., Falls Church. A $35 fee covers books, materials and instruction. 703-237-0866.

The Fairfax County Public Library and Volunteer Fairfax are sponsoring a Teen Volunteer Fair designed to help students in middle and high school find volunteer opportunities to fulfill community service hours required by area schools. The fair is at 3 p.m. Saturday at Centerville Regional Library, 14200 St. Germain Dr., Centreville. 703-830-2223.
