Here are some highlights of Mark R. Warner's political career:

1989 Helps manage L. Douglas Wilder's successful campaign for governor.

1993-95 Serves as state Democratic Party chairman.

1996 Challenges Sen. John W. Warner (R-Va.); spends $10 million of his own money but loses by six percentage points.

2001 Elected governor, defeating Republican Mark L. Earley.

2005 Creates a federal political action committee, a first step toward running for president.

2006 Crisscrosses the country, raising money and speaking in states with early presidential primaries and caucuses.

Yesterday Announces that he will not seek the Democratic nomination for president in 2008.
