Orange You Sorry You Don't Live in Kenova?
· Ric Griffith is crazy about pumpkins. He has 2,400 in his yard, with 600 still to be delivered.
Each year at his home in Kenova, West Virginia, Griffith builds a bigger Halloween display than the year before.
This year's project: a 16-by-16-foot pumpkin wall that's also a sound-and-light show. A computer program will play the "1812 Overture" while lights inside the pumpkins flash on and off in time with the music. A scarecrow will conduct the music.
Hundreds of volunteers help Griffith gut the pumpkins. The insides are used in pies and other goodies. Griffith, who is 57, has been creating Halloween extravaganzas for 28 years and says he has carved 25,798 pumpkins! That's a lot of pies.
Earthquake Hits Hawaii
· "We were rocking and rolling . . . swaying back and forth, like King Kong's pushing your house."
That's how Anne LaVasseur described the major earthquake that struck Hawaii on Sunday.
The quake and several strong aftershocks caused some landslides and widespread power and phone outages throughout the islands. There were no reports of deaths, but some buildings and roads were heavily damaged.
Correction: Our memorials page last Tuesday said the stones at the National Japanese American Memorial represent the islands of Japan. They represent the five generations of Japanese Americans in this country.
