At least three and possibly four families were displaced from their Silver Spring apartment complex early this morning when a fire broke out in one of the units, Montgomery County fire officials said.
No one was hurt in the 3:30 a.m. blaze, which was largely confined to one, terrace-level apartment at the Rosemary Village Apartments in the 1900 block of East-West Highway, Montgomery fire spokesman Pete Piringer said.
But smoke damage--and water damage from the effort to extinguish the fire -- left three or maybe four apartments uninhabitable, Piringer said.
No one was home in the apartment where the fire broke out, fire officials said. Occupants of neighboring units evacuated safely, and Piringer said they will likely be given temporary accommodation in other, empty units in the complex.
The cause of the blaze is under investigation, Piringer said. A man who police described as a "person of interest" was arrested at the scene of the fire, on unrelated charges. He was charged with trespassing, and ordered to stay away from the property, Piringer said.
Police told the fire department that the man who was arrested was related to the occupants of the apartment where the fire broke out.
