A new Brookings Institution report analyzes survey and test data from the 2003 Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study. It found disconnects between performance and other factors.

Portion of U.S. eighth-graders who agree a lot with the statement "I usually do well in mathematics": 39 percent

Portion in Korea who do: 6 percent

Portion of U.S. teachers who relate eighth-grade math lessons to daily lives: 66 percent

Portion in Japan who do: 14 percent

National eighth-grade math scores, out of a maximum score of 1,000: United States, 504; Japan, 570; Korea, 589

International average for eighth grade: 467
