· TENNIS : Roger Federer rallied in two tiebreakers to beat Robin Soderling of Sweden, 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (10-8), and advance to the quarterfinals of the Madrid Masters.

Federer will next play Robby Ginepri , who topped seventh-seeded Tommy Robredo , 6-3, 7-6 (7-3).

Defending champion Rafael Nadal won 27 of 30 points on his first serve, broke 13th-seeded Tommy Haas three times and eliminated the German, 6-4, 6-3, in 88 minutes.

Fourth-seeded David Nalbandian eliminated Tim Henman , Marat Safin rolled past Kristof Vliegen and Tomas Berdych served 23 aces to beat sixth-seeded Andy Roddick .

· CYCLING : Former Tour de France winner Jan Ullrich , still fighting doping allegations, quit the Swiss cycling federation and is looking for another racing license. Ullrich said on his Web site that he was leaving Swiss Cycling because of what he called its "slanderous attitude" toward him.

Ullrich, a German, lives in Switzerland and has been racing with a Swiss Cycling license.
