A Catholic school in Bethesda cancelled classes for today after more than 50 children became ill Wednesday with what officials believe is a virus. The school will be professionally cleaned over the weekend in hopes of removing any contaminants.

In a letter to parents , the principal at Our Lady of Lourdes School said dozens of youngsters remained sick with upset stomachs and other symptoms on Thursday, and some parents elected to keep their children home to avoid exposure.

The letter said the symptoms of the ill children "are consistent with a Norwalk type virus ."
