Maddux Ties Record By Winning A Gold Glove for the 16th Time

Pitcher Greg Maddux of the Los Angeles Dodgers won his 16th Gold Glove yesterday, tying the record shared by pitcher Jim Kaat and third baseman Brooks Robinson .
San Francisco's Omar Vizquel won his 11th Gold Glove, closing within two of Ozzie Smith 's record for shortstops.
Atlanta outfielder Andruw Jones won his ninth straight Gold Glove, and St. Louis third baseman Scott Rolen won his seventh. Cardinals first baseman Albert Pujols won for the first time, as did New York Mets outfielder Carlos Beltran .
Other winners included Houston catcher Brad Ausmus , San Diego outfielder Mike Cameron and Arizona second baseman Orlando Hudson . . . .
Baseball owners unanimously approved their new labor contract during a telephone conference call. The five-year deal runs until December 2011. . . .
Pedro Martinez says that if his right shoulder doesn't return to full strength, he would consider retiring. Martinez, 35, missed the latter part of the season for the Mets with a calf injury and had surgery Oct. 5 to repair a torn rotator cuff. . . .
Barry Bonds and the Giants have begun talks about a new contract that would keep the slugger in San Francisco for 2007.
Bonds, 42, has filed for free agency and it is still unclear if he will play a 15th season for the Giants. He is 21 home runs shy of Hank Aaron's career mark of 755. . . .
In Tokyo, Jermaine Dye hit a two-run homer and John Lackey worked five innings as the MLB all-stars beat the Japan stars, 3-2, in the opener of the five-game tour.
· COURTS: A 20-year-old nephew of former heavyweight champion Trevor Berbick and another man have been charged with beating Berbick to death and leaving his body in a church courtyard, police in Kingston, Jamaica, said.
Harold Berbick had been involved in a land dispute with his uncle, and along with Kenton Gordon , 18, was charged late Thursday. They confessed to the crime during an interrogation. Berbick's body was discovered last Saturday.
· COLLEGE BASKETBALL: Former Oklahoma State coach Eddie Sutton was released from a Stillwater, Okla., hospital after a response to a medication led paramedics to take him by ambulance to the emergency room. Sutton, 70, said he is taking medication for neck pain. . . .
Maryland's men's basketball team will host its final exhibition at 8 p.m. tonight against Carleton University of Canada.
