Scott Finishes Best Season With Win in Final PGA Event

Monday, November 6, 2006

With a trophy in hand, Adam Scott can finally call this his best year.

His most consistent season was missing only a PGA Tour victory, and Scott took care of that in the final event yesterday. He closed with a 4-under-par 66 to capture the Tour Championship in Atlanta by three shots over Jim Furyk .

Scott turned the season finale into a snoozer by playing mistake-free golf until it no longer mattered. Hundreds of fans headed for the parking lot when the 26-year-old Australian made the turn with a three-stroke lead.

It was the perfect way to end the PGA Tour season for Scott.

His goal was to be in contention more often, and he accomplished that with nine top 10s, six of those finishes no worse than third.

"It's been a long time since I've been here, winning on the PGA Tour," Scott said. "I had to work hard for it." . . .

In Mie, Japan, Karrie Webb ended Annika Sorenstam 's Mizuno Classic winning streak at five. Webb closed with a 6-under 66 for a four-stroke victory over Kaori Higo in Japan's lone LPGA Tour event.

Sorenstam shot a 70 to finish five strokes back at 9-under 207 on the Kashikojima Country Club course.

"You can't take anything away from Annika winning five years in a row at one tournament," Webb said. "It's an unbelievable feat."

· BASEBALL : Gary Sheffield 's $13 million option was exercised by the Yankees, who plan to trade the outfielder rather than keep him.

By exercising the option, the Yankees prevented Sheffield from becoming a free agent and blocked him from perhaps signing with the Red Sox.

Sheffield, who turns 38 on Nov. 18, was an all-star during his first two seasons with the Yankees but missed most of this year after injuring a wrist on April 29. New York acquired Bobby Abreu from Philadelphia on July 30 to take over in right field.

· TENNIS : Former No. 1 Kim Clijsters won her comeback tournament before an adoring home crowd when she beat Kaia Kanepi , 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, to retain the Gaz de France title in Hasselt, Belgium.

· COLLEGES : Freshman Shelly Moeller scored in the eighth minute as the Navy women's soccer team defeated Colgate, 1-0, in Lewisburg, Pa., to win the Patriot League title and earn an NCAA tournament berth. It is the second NCAA tournament for the Midshipmen (21-1). . . .

In Virginia Beach, Hofstra outscored George Mason, 3-2, in a penalty kick tiebreaker following a 1-1 tie to win the Colonial Athletic Association men's title. . . .

At the Maryland SoccerPlex, Mike Grella scored seven minutes into overtime as top-seeded Duke edged No. 2 Wake Forest, 1-0, to capture the ACC men's title. The NCAA men's and women's tournament pairings will be announced today. . . .

Tennessee starting running back Arian Foster and two other players were arrested early yesterday after police were called to a fight at a nightclub.

The players were charged with disorderly conduct and underage consumption, police said.

· SOCCER : Michael Dawson and Aaron Lennon scored as Tottenham beat Chelsea, 2-1, for its first league victory over the Blues in 16 years. Chelsea's woes were compounded when captain John Terry was ejected late in the second half.

Lennon, an England winger, notched the winner at Tottenham's White Hart Lane stadium early in the second half.

"Before the game, we had a feeling it could be our day today," said Spurs striker Robbie Keane .
