Jon Tester, 50, is a third-generation family farmer who grows organic crops on Montana land homesteaded by his grandfather in 1916. Tester started his bid for the Senate seat long held by Republican Conrad Burns by traveling across the state on a farm tractor-trailer. His focus: the unpopular war in Iraq and Burns's ties to disgraced Washington lobbyist Jack Abramoff.

Tester has called on President Bush to lay out an exit strategy for Iraq and bring home U.S. troops. Though he has made his living through farming and a butcher shop, Tester went into state politics several years ago to fight against high energy costs in Montana.

He became president of the state Senate last year. Tester was heavily outspent during the campaign but proved self-effacing and lighthearted in one TV ad that focused on his signature buzz cut.
