Sheldon Whitehouse (D) slipped into a Senate seat that had been occupied by Republicans for 30 years.

Whitehouse edged out the moderate Sen. Lincoln D. Chafee (R) in a race more about control of the Senate than about confidence in an incumbent. An ex-attorney general, Whitehouse ran his campaign on what he called the failings of the Bush administration.

Whitehouse, 51, has been described as an "unlikely champion for the common man." His father was a wealthy U.S. ambassador. The younger Whitehouse grew up in South Africa, Laos, Cambodia and Guinea, among other places. He attended a New England prep school and Yale University. (Whitehouse's father, Charles, and Chafee's father, John, were roommates at Yale.)

Much of Whitehouse's career has been devoted to public service. During a stint in private practice, he said, "I'm no longer doing what I believe I was raised and trained and basically bred to do."
