Rep. Jim Gibbons (R), a decorated Air Force veteran, airline pilot, lawyer and hydrologist, won the governor's race in Nevada, beating Democratic state Sen. Dina Titus.
Outspending Titus $4.5 million to $3 million, Gibbons, 61, weathered several scandals during the race, including allegations that he had harassed a cocktail waitress after a drinking bout, took an all-expenses-paid vacation from a campaign contributor and hired an illegal immigrant despite supporting legislation to expel illegal immigrants from the United States.
Like many Republicans in the West, Gibbons is a staunch supporter of mining interests. He was the co-author of a report last year that attempted to frame mercury in a more positive light.
