Baltimore Mayor Martin O'Malley toppled Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. to return Maryland's governorship to the Democrats.
O'Malley, 43, a former prosecutor and frontman in a Celtic rock band, became mayor of Maryland's largest city in 1999, at age 36, after two terms on the Baltimore City Council. As mayor, he vowed to reduce violent crime, claiming a 40 percent decline in annual incidents since taking office. He is married to Catherine Curran O'Malley, a Baltimore district judge and daughter of Maryland's retiring attorney general.
O'Malley was elected governor in a state where Democrats outnumber Republicans nearly 2 to 1. Ehrlich, Maryland's first GOP governor in a generation, hammered the mayor during the campaign for his city's stubborn murder rate and low-performing schools. O'Malley portrayed Ehrlich as uninterested in the work of government. Last year Time magazine named him one of the nation's five best big-city mayors.
