Bingaman, 63, likes to operate behind the scenes and shuns national publicity.

As the ranking Democrat on the energy committee, Bingaman has been able to exercise some control over the Los Alamos and Sandia labs, two federal nuclear research facilities important to his state.

First elected in 1982, he helped write the 2005 energy bill. He wants to expand nuclear power and promote research into "clean coal," and he thinks the government should toughen emissions standards for cars and sport-utility vehicles.
