A security guard working at a FedEx Ground distribution center in Beltsville was found dead there yesterday, police said.
The victim, identified as Reina N. Lynch, 26, was a school bus driver and the mother of two children. She had taken the security job to help make ends meet, her mother said.
Police said a colleague arriving for the day shift at 7 a.m. discovered Lynch lying on the ground with a single gunshot wound in her upper body. She was pronounced dead at the scene, said Cpl. Stephen Pacheco of the Prince George's County police department.
Lynch, of Bowie, worked in a guardhouse at the entrance to a fenced compound in the 11900 block of Trolley Lane.
The only buildings nearby are office complexes and warehouses.
FedEx Ground spokeswoman Allison Sobczak said she was unaware of any robbery at the facility at the time of the killing.
She said company officials were providing investigators with security films, entry logs and other information.
"We are extremely saddened by the incident, and our condolences go out to her family and friends," Sobczak said.
Lynch worked for Ronin Risk International, a security firm based in Salt Lake City. President Michael Petty said that the company has 600 employees and specializes in providing security for goods in transit and at warehouses and distribution centers. "We've never lost an employee in this fashion," he said.
Lynch, the single parent of two children, ages 4 and 7, rose each morning before dawn and drove a Montgomery County school bus, said her mother, Marlyn Evans of Bowie. The security job was to earn extra money, Evans said.
"I was always telling her to quit that job. I didn't like that she was a woman working all by herself," her mother said.
Lynch and her children had recently left their apartment in Silver Spring because of rising rent and moved in with Evans. But Lynch was trying hard to get back on her own, her mother said.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Prince George's police homicide unit at 301-772-4925. Those wishing to remain anonymous may call Crime Solvers at 866-411-8477.
A cash reward of up to $25,000 is being offered for information that leads to an arrest and indictment.
