A power failure disrupted Red Line service in the District for more than 90 minutes this morning, and commuters are being advised to expect major delays throughout the morning rush, Metro spokeswoman Lisa Farbstein said.
The outage halted Metrorail service between the Van Ness and Farragut North stations, stranding about 75 passengers on one northbound train between Woodley Park and Dupont Circle.
Those passengers sat on the train for more than an hour, until supervisors from the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority were able to board the train and escort the passengers off the tracks, Farbstein said.
Although power was restored and service resumed at 7:29 a.m., Farbstein said, there was a significant backlog of trains, and large crowds at stations and on shuttle buses that had been summoned to ferry passengers between the closed stations.
"There will be residual delays," Farbstein said. She said riders can call WMATA's information line at 202-962-2007 for the latest updates.
