When he crashed to the floor after attempting to block a shot by Cleveland's Shannon Brown near the end of Saturday night's game at Verizon Center, Jarvis Hayes said he had immediate flashbacks to collisions that caused him to miss 89 games with knee injuries during the last two seasons.
"I thought about the last couple of years, being hurt and everything and it was very painful," Hayes said. "It was scary."
Hayes, who hit his head on the floor and suffered a contusion to his lower back, was taken off the court on a stretcher and was brought to Sibley Memorial Hospital in Northwest, but X-rays showed no signs of serious damage and he was released late Saturday night.
Hayes attended practice yesterday but was limited to conditioning work on a stationary bike, and he will be further evaluated at this morning's shoot-around in Dallas.
Coach Eddie Jordan did not rule out Hayes for tonight's game against the Mavericks. Hayes said he'd like to play, but both player and coach said they would defer to the team's athletic trainers before making a decision.
"My back is pretty sore, it tightened up on me [Sunday] night so I couldn't sleep in the bed, I had to sleep on the floor," said Hayes, who is averaging 6.2 points and 2.1 rebounds in 18.6 minutes. "We'll see how it feels when I wake up in the morning and go from there." . . .
After an 0-4 start, Dallas has won six straight. The Mavericks won both meetings with the Wizards last season, 103-97 on Feb. 15 at Dallas and 104-94 on March 17 at Verizon Center.
