The Nov. 15 front-page article "Fenty Scores Early Legislative Victory as Stadium Parking Plan Is Approved" offered another example of a viable, worthwhile project being held hostage to parking.
Instead of filling the streets with joyful fans who arrive by walking, taking Metro or riding bikes, we would rather they honk their way into parking spaces. Meanwhile, America's obesity problem continues, and we blame it all on diet.
Are we so beholden to our vehicles that walking has become anathema to development?
Mayor Anthony A. Williams (D) cited the need, as the article described it, to "jump-start a sweeping revitalization of the Anacostia River waterfront" and to develop garages and condominiums to increase the city's tax base. The District must provide parking for 1,225 vehicles at the stadium by March 2008 or face severe financial penalties.
These atrocious parking plans may have to be dealt with in court. I hope sober minds will conclude that parking should not be made paramount to enjoyable sessions at the ballpark or the well-being of the neighborhood.
