Dane Watts made the winning free throws with 7.5 seconds left, and Creighton survived three costly turnovers in the last two minutes yesterday to defeat George Mason, 58-56, in Omaha.
Creighton (2-1) committed three straight turnovers trying to inbound the ball after George Mason baskets. The Patriots (2-2) converted each to tie the score at 56 with 48 seconds left.
Will Thomas beat Anthony Tolliver one-on-one along the baseline for the tying basket after Tolliver could not handle Watts's inbounds pass.
Watts was fouled by John Vaughan after taking a pass from Josh Dotzler underneath the basket. After he made the free throws, Folarin Campbell drove the length of the court and missed a baseline shot just before the buzzer.
"I was proud of the way our kids hung in there," George Mason Coach Jim Larranaga said. "We fell behind but never quit. We forced a couple turnovers and capitalized on those. But we never could get into a good offensive rhythm."
Meantime, sophomore forward Sammy Hernandez is leaving George Mason and wants to transfer to a school closer to his Florida home.
Hernandez averaged 2.8 points and 3.1 rebounds in 35 games last season, with one start. He appeared in all five games during George Mason's surprising run to the Final Four.
· HOWARD 116, VMI 111: Darryl Hudson was perfect on six free throws in the final two minutes to help the host Bison hold off the Keydets.

Reggie Williams finished with 30 points for VMI (3-4), his fourth 30-point game of the season.
The Keydets entered the night as the nation's highest-scoring team, averaging 104.7 points per game.
The Bison seemed to relish the fast tempo and didn't try to slow down play despite committing 30 turnovers.
