Getting Started
Looking for résumé radiance? How about an internship with cachet -- such as those at the Smithsonian Institution or the "Late Show With David Letterman"?
They, along with the FBI and J.P. Morgan, make Vault.com's list of best internships for 2007 -- 10 employers that offer college students intriguing work, career development and pay them, too.
Three employers -- the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences; Inroads, an organization that places minority students in corporate internships; and Northwestern Mutual Financial Network -- have made Vault's list for years and are in the latest edition of the career information Web site's guide to top internships.
The Smithsonian offers about 900 internships in its museums and offices, some with weekly pay as high as $450, others unpaid. The Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden has year-round internships in several departments; the National Air and Space Museum offerings include aircraft preservation.
An FBI intern might focus on communications or forensic sciences. A grade-point average of at least 2.5 is required, as is passing a background check.
