Car-sharing companies such as Flexcar and Zipcar have become a popular alternative to owning a vehicle in the Washington area. Here are frequently asked questions about the service:
What is car sharing?
Car sharing is a useful option for people who drive only once in a while. Customers may reserve cars by the hour or for a day. After an initial membership fee of about $75, rates are about $10 an hour and $60 a day. Refueling, maintenance and insurance are included.
Where do I pick up my keys and car?
Companies recommend making reservations online or by telephone a few days in advance; however, they can usually accommodate requests made minutes before pickup. Cars are generally parked near metered spots or in garages throughout a city. Members are issued a plastic card when they apply for the service. A vehicle is locked and its ignition disabled until a card matching the reservation is scanned. The ignition key is either attached to the steering column or inside the glove box.
What if my car isn't there when I go to pick it up?
Customers must call the company to report a late return or missing vehicle, and an agent books another car close by. Members can call an automated number to extend their reservation if they are going to be late returning a car, but they may be charged a late fee.
