Pedestrian Is Struck While Crossing Street

A pedestrian was struck by two cars and killed yesterday evening as he tried to cross a busy street in the Wheaton area, Montgomery County police said.

They said the man, who was not identified immediately, was crossing Veirs Mill Road near Claridge Road about 5:15 p.m. when he was struck by a car and fell. That car stopped, and a car that had been behind it drove around it, struck the fallen pedestrian and dragged him for about 30 yards, police said. It was not clear whether the man had been in a crosswalk, police said.

Group Will Fund Metro Tunnel Study

A group of Fairfax County businesses and residents announced Friday that it has raised $3.5 million to pay for engineering plans showing the feasibility of running a Metrorail extension below ground through Tysons Corner instead of on an elevated track.

The group, organized by the Greater McLean Chamber of Commerce and dubbed, is seeking to reverse a September decision by Gov. Timothy M. Kaine (D) against a below-ground route for the four-mile stretch through Tysons.
