"Before my nose was fixed, it almost felt like there was a hole in it, like there was air going in different directions."

Smith said: "It's going to a certain amount of time for that incision to heal up, which should be about 7 to 10 days. Then after that we have to make sure everything is intact. We don't want to bring him back early and have problems."

Zednik Is Day-to-Day

Right wing Richard Zednik, who left Saturday's game with a groin injury, was not able to skate. But team officials are hopeful his injury is not as severe as originally thought and have listed the veteran as day-to-day, although he is likely out for tomorrow's game against Ottawa.

Zednik has been one of the Capitals' best players of late, recording nine points, including five goals, in his last 10 games. . . .

Center Dainius Zubrus, meantime, returned to practice and is expected to face the Senators. The Capitals' second-leading goal-scorer had missed two games with a mysterious infection that kept him in bed for almost four days.

"It wasn't bird flu, but I was actually scared about it," Zubrus said.

"I've never been so sick in my life. I was coughing up blood, my head was 600 pounds, my throat was sore, my fever was high, my eyes were devil red."

Then he joked, "I'll be back [tomorrow], if I can crack the lineup after the way we've played the last few games." . . .

Draft picks Patrick McNeill (2005) and Mathieu Perreault (2006) have been invited to try out for the Canadian National Junior Team.
