Patrick Cullen registered six goals and three assists in this season's first three games. The 6-foot, 185-pound forward is willing to cut across the middle and risk a big hit to get an open shot. Cullen also has a knack for scoring the big goal.

DeMatha is young -- the Stags have seven sophomores and three freshmen -- but Coach Matt Revkin thinks his team could be in the mix for an Maryland Scholastic Hockey League private schools championship, thanks to the emergence of junior goaltender Greg Monahan. A DeMatha lacrosse player competing in organized hockey for the first time in four years, Monahan has helped the Stags to an 11-1 start. . . .
After Stone Bridge's overtime loss to Woodbridge in the Northern Virginia Scholastic Hockey League championship game last season, Coach John Lynch recalls Craig Kitto, now a junior, telling his teammates: "Don't worry. They got us this time, but we'll be back next year." Kitto leads a team with much of its young talent back, including forwards Eddie Cutler, a sophomore, and Garrett Quinn, a junior. . . .
At the end of last season, Ryan Dove was thinking of going to a prep school for his senior season. Instead, the All-Met is back at Hylton to see if he can better the NVSHL single-season points record (49) he set last season. Dove got off to a good start with four goals and an assist in the Bulldogs' season-opening win. The only league player with a better debut was Logan Nicholson, who had five goals and an assist for Mountain View in that program's debut. . . .
MSHL semifinalist South River has scored 41 goals in its first four games. . . .
Holton-Arms, which won the MSHL girls' title for the third straight year, is the favorite for another championship behind cousins Bailey Fogarty (a junior center who missed last season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament) and Lucy Hayes (a junior defenseman who also is a top lacrosse player). Holton-Arms also will compete in the Women's Ice Hockey League of the Mid-Atlantic, which the Panthers helped form two years ago. The league has six other teams from Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
