GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip -- Palestinian gunmen opened fire outside a courthouse in the town of Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip Wednesday, killing one man, witnesses said.

Palestinian security officials said the man was Bassam al-Fara, 30, a judge at the Islamic court, and a Hamas member. There was no immediate claim of responsibility.

The demonstration was organized to protest the deaths of the children whose car was riddled with bullets as they drove to school Monday morning. Fatah officials have accused Hamas of being behind the shooting. The children's father is an intelligence officer and Fatah loyalist who is considered an enemy of Hamas. The drive-by shooting came two days after the killing of the three young children of a Fatah-allied Palestinian intelligence officer, sparking renewed clashes between the rival Hamas and Fatah factions and raising the specter of a civil war among Palestinians.
