Data on the District, Maryland and Virginia from the Trust for America's Health, which rated preparedness for pandemic influenza, bioterrorism and other crises:

Seasonal flu vaccination rates for seniors, 2003-2005

The District: 58 percent

Maryland: 64 percent

Virginia: 68 percent

Percentage of bed capacity that would be reached within two weeks of a moderately severe flu pandemic

The District: 61 percent

Maryland: 181 percent

Virginia: 134 percent

Pneumonia vaccination rates for seniors

National median: 66 percent

The District: 52 percent

Maryland: 62 percent

Virginia: 67 percent
