Bethesda-Chevy Chase

Last season:17-7, 12-3

Returning starters: Four

Watch this guy: Senior forward Maurice Pearson may be the county's top player, a 6-foot-8 Ohio recruit who poses all sorts of matchup problems. The 220-pounder is a strong inside scorer, with a nice combination of size and strength.

Outlook: The Barons surprised a lot of people when they advanced to the 3A title game two years ago. If they return, it won't stun anyone. They have six players 6-3 or taller, including 6-4 junior swingman Austin Cooley, who is getting some Division I recruiting interest. Nine of the 13 Barons are seniors, but look for 6-3 sophomore Nate Koenig to play an important role.

Last season:4-17, 2-12

Returning starters: Two

Watch this guy: Senior point guard Darius Smith was very solid in the Blazers' scrimmages. On a team with several versatile players but no standouts, look for him to take control.

Outlook: First-year coach Mark DeStefano came from St. John's, where he was an assistant, and will try to invigorate a program that hasn't won more than eight games since going 20-4 in 2001-02. Senior forwards Ross Williams and Tori Patton, role players last season, will be asked to lead.

Last season:4-18, 3-11
