Under pressure midway through the third quarter, Saints quarterback Drew Brees, right, began running toward the line of scrimmage at his 36. As he was being tackled, Brees lobbed a pass to the left sideline in the direction of Billy Miller. The reserve tight end made a move to get around linebacker Lemar Marshall, then dove for a fingertip reception. Officials ruled, however, that Brees had crossed the line of scrimmage when he threw, nullifying the play.
Cornerback Carlos Rogers had been much maligned this season for poor coverage, but he made two plays in the fourth quarter that helped preserve the victory. First with 10:36 to play, Rogers intercepted an underthrown pass by Brees intended for Devery Henderson along the left sideline. Then Rogers batted down a pass in the end zone intended for Terrance Copper that would have tied the score with less than a minute to play.
