THE SINGLES FILE

A weekly playlist for the listener with a one-track mind.

DJ Mehdi featuring Chromeo: "I Am Somebody"

For anyone who's ever had a velvet rope stand between them and a killer Saturday night, meet your new theme song. DJ Mehdi's wiggling, jiggling dance anthem is so much fun it makes a night on the sidewalk feel like the hottest ticket in town.

Alela Diane: "The Pirate's Gospel"

As the blogerati continue to fawn over harpist Joanna Newsom, why not be the first to tell your pals about Newsom's pal Alela Diane? This MySpace tune from the Portland, Ore., singer evokes a night 'round the campfire with freak-folk heroine Karen Dalton.

Devin the Dude featuring Tony Mac: "Treat Me Cold"

Nobody does heartbroken, horny, lewd and lovelorn quite like Devin the Dude. Over a track worthy of late-night R&B radio, the scorned Houston rapper laments: "You got me in here twiddling my thumbs / And I was hoping I'd be gettin' me some."

The Points: "Rock n Roll No Rules"

Serving up snarling punk rock in the vein of the Stooges and the MC5, these local loudmouths sound way more Detroit than D.C. With "Rock n Roll No Rules," they lay down a fuzz so tightly wound, shag carpeting might get jealous.--
