Cross your fingers, Washington -- there's still a chance we may get our own all-wonk version of "The Real World"!
"Capitol Hill Girls" is a TV pilot filmed here this summer, starring five women with quintessential D.C. careers (lobbyist, journalist, Hill flack, etc.). But we recently learned that the estrogen-friendly Oxygen network, which first optioned the show, has taken a pass.
Could it be that an earnest docu-series about D.C. strivers doesn't fit in with the channel's celebritainment lineup ("The Janice Dickinson Modeling Agency," " Mo'Nique's F.A.T. Chance")? No worries: Producer Stephanie Steele says she's heard from networks that could offer it a better home in '07.
Which is good news for at least two of its stars. Malia Lazu said she was drawn to the project because she feels our town is misunderstood beyond the Beltway. "Anything that shows the actual people who work here and the accessibility you can have with your government is helpful for democracy," she said.
Lazu, director of racial justice campaigns for a PAC, Progressive Majority, is no reality-TV newbie -- she was a finalist on Showtime's "American Candidate" in 2004. Other stars include Hill press secretary Lindsey Mask, IBM lobbyist Keisha Woods, campaign staffer Jodi Williams and National Journal writer Erin McPike.
But if you're waiting for the hot-tub scenes, look elsewhere. "Because we're young professionals and wary of reality TV, they spent a lot of time convincing me that they're not going to make us look bad," said McPike, 23, who said she was mostly filmed at home or work, not in bars.
Her only complaint? Same as the others -- the show's name. "I'm damn near 30 years old," laughed Lazu. "I don't know if anyone other than my grandfather would call me a girl!"
O'Donnell vs. the Donald: Warning -- It Isn't Pretty
Who's winning in the Rosie O'Donnell/Donald Trump battle? Decide for yourself with this recap:
O'Donnell, on ABC's "The View," calls Trump a "snake oil salesman" for letting party animal Tara Conner keep her Miss USA crown: "Left the first wife, had an affair, left the second wife, had an affair . . . but he's the moral compass for 20-year-olds in America?" Also claims he went "bankrupt."
Trump, in various TV appearances, calls O'Donnell a "loser" and more: "She is a very, very unattractive woman who really is a bully. . . . She's disgusting, both inside and out . . . fat, ugly face. . . . I'll send one of my friends to pick up her girlfriend, and that should be easy." Also threatens to sue. O'Donnell in response yesterday mocks Trump's comb-over, makes a farting noise.
In other news: Tara Conner goes into rehab; Mothers Against Drunk Driving cuts ties with Miss Teen USA because of her alleged club-hopping with Conner; and Miss Nevada USA loses her crown after naughty pics of her turn up on the Web. Pretty girls are an ugly business . . .
HEY, ISN'T THAT . . . ?
Madeleine Albright, in a brown pantsuit, leaning on the wall outside collegiate hangout Booeymonger in Georgetown yesterday while chatting on a cellphone. Yeah, we totally wanted to cut classes yesterday, too!
LOVE, ETC.
Born: Twin girls -- D'Lila Star and Jessie James -- to hip-hop mogul Sean "Diddy" Combs, 37, and girlfriend Kim Porter, 36, in Manhattan early yesterday. Combs was fashionably late to the hospital (he flew in from Toronto, where he's filming "A Raisin in the Sun"), but made it in time for his daughters' delivery, his publicist told the AP. Combs has two sons -- Christian, 8, with Porter, and Justin, 12, with ex-girlfriend Misa Hylton-Brim.
THIS JUST IN . . .
America's most infamous White House intern has earned a master's degree. Monica Lewinsky graduated from the London School of Economics with an advanced degree in social psychology, her publicist told Reuters yesterday. The 32-year-old is now interviewing for jobs in the U.K. What, no more internships?
