The Redskins placed linebacker Marcus Washington on injured reserve with a strained right knee yesterday, ending his season with two games remaining.
Coach Joe Gibbs mentioned the possibility on Friday that Washington may be shut down for the season.
Gibbs said Washington would miss today's game in St. Louis, and the team's medical staff would meet further to consider options.
It is the first time that Washington, 29, has been placed on injured reserve in his seven-year career. He had made 62 consecutive starts. Rocky McIntosh or Jeff Posey will likely start in his place.
· BUCCANEERS: Running back Carnell Williams won't play against Cleveland because of a foot injury.
Williams has rushed for 798 yards and one touchdown, yet he did not make the trip with the team.
Williams was injured during the second quarter in a 34-31 loss to Chicago last Sunday and did not practice this past week.
· VIKINGS: Defensive tackle Kevin Williams, recently chosen to play in his second Pro Bowl, agreed to a contract extension.
"I'm excited to get a deal done and finish my career with the team that drafted me," Williams said in a statement.
Williams, a first-round draft pick in 2003, anchors a defense that is giving up just 54.5 rushing yards a game, tops in the NFL.
He also has five sacks.
