The Rams scored consecutive touchdowns in the quarter by exploiting a secondary that was without Springs, the Redskins' most experienced cornerback. Veteran wide receiver Isaac Bruce made a juggling catch in the back of the end zone that initially was ruled incomplete, but Coach Scott Linehan challenged, and the call was overturned. Reserve tight end Dominique Byrd gave the Rams a 14-7 lead with a 27-yard touchdown catch on their next possession. The Redskins responded with a six-yard touchdown run by Betts that was set up by Vernon Fox's blocked punt. They regained the lead when Campbell completed a nine-yard touchdown pass to Cooley.
