The Redskins' secondary surrendered yet another big play early in the second quarter, and this time it was unclear if Sean Taylor or Vernon Fox was culpable. Isaac Bruce started on the right with cornerback Kenny Wright in coverage. Wright let Bruce go by, presumably thinking he would have safety help. But Taylor hesitated, momentarily moving toward the line of scrimmage, and Bruce got past him and Fox for a 43-yard reception.

Fox had a critical punt block midway through the second quarter with the Redskins trailing, 14-7. Fox blocked Matt Turk, a former Redskins punter, and Washington recovered the ball at the Rams 8-yard line. Two plays later, running back Ladell Betts scored on a six-yard carry. Incidentally, Fox is starting in place of safety Adam Archuleta, who used to play for the Rams and signed a lucrative contract with the Redskins during the offseason.
