The Rams tested the Redskins' secondary on the first play from scrimmage, and cornerback Shawn Springs was up to the challenge. Quarterback Marc Bulger went deep over the middle to wide receiver Torry Holt, who was a step ahead of Springs with no one between him and the end zone. But the pass was a tad underthrown, and Springs was able to knock the ball down and came close to intercepting it.

Tight end Chris Cooley has been a favorite target of quarterback Jason Campbell, especially when the first-year starter has been under pressure. During the Redskins' first possession of the game and facing second down and nine from their 34, Campbell faced a heavy rush but released the ball just before getting hit. Cooley reached high to secure the pass for a 10-yard completion that extended the drive and resulted in a touchdown for a 7-0 lead.
