An Army Reservist who had recently been called up to serve in Iraq was killed by a police officer in Maryland this afternoon after he aimed a gun at another officer in front of his father's St. Mary's County home, police said.
James E. Dean, 28, was shot once by an officer after a 14-hour standoff that began when he barricaded himself inside his father's home on Dusty Lane near Brown Road with several weapons.
Dean threatened to kill himself several times between 10 p.m. Christmas night and noon today and had fired at officers multiple times, St. Mary's County Sheriff Tim Cameron said. A handful of bullets hit police cars, but no officers were injured.
Dean's father, Joseph L. Dean Jr., was not home during the standoff, authorities said.
Neighbors were evacuated from the surrounding homes when police responded to the scene.
At about noon, tactical teams from the Maryland State Police and St. Mary's, Calvert and Charles County sheriffs' offices informed Dean that they would use tear gas to force him out of his home, Cameron said.
Police said Dean stepped outside his front door and pointed a weapon at an officer. Another officer on the scene, believing his colleague was in grave danger, shot Dean in the chest, they said.
