CRAWFORD, Tex., Dec. 29 -- President Bush and his wife, Laura, were briefly evacuated from their central Texas house into an armored vehicle on Friday when a tornado warning was issued for the area, the White House said.

They were driven to a tornado shelter on the ranch, and the president, the first lady and their two dogs sat inside the vehicle until the weather cleared, said Scott Stanzel, deputy White House press secretary. They were never moved into the shelter, he said.

Stanzel said that he did not know how long the Bushes and their Scottish terriers, Miss Beazley and Barney, had to stay in the vehicle but that it was not "terribly long."
