Caroline Jones, who is in the theater program at Einstein, said she was never one to read dictionaries or encyclopedias without a reason. "I watch TV, and if I saw something interesting, I would go look it up and want to know more about it," she said.
Her strongest "Jeopardy!" fields would be movies, music, theater, literature "and anything pop-culture-related," she said. She hopes chemistry does not show up as a category.
For Bartman, the road to "Jeopardy!" was littered with hundreds of books. She has been a big reader all her life, and her mother thinks that helped her and her sister, Jane, 15, retain certain words and facts. Jane was the District spelling bee champ in 2002.
"We do watch 'Jeopardy!' occasionally, especially when [all-time champion] Ken Jennings was on," said their mother, also named Caroline.
At National Cathedral School, Bartman enjoys French, English and history, runs cross-country and is on the climbing team. She also belongs to the Whitechapel Guild, the bell-ringing club at the cathedral. She is not sure about her strengths in the game show.
"It's difficult to say. I'm always learning new things and forgetting lots of stuff," she said. "Last year, I was taking a U.S. history course, and I remembered a lot of U.S. history. Of course, now I've forgotten a lot of it, and it's sad."
She dreads sports as a "Jeopardy!" category, she said.
But both Carolines said they think the experience will be lots of fun. The episodes, five a day on Jan. 4 and 5, will be shot in Los Angeles. The tournament airs Feb. 5 through Feb. 16. Neither teenager plans to study for the challenge -- too many other things to do.
"I've got exams the week I get back," Bartman said.
