As if top-ranked Maryland wasn't already deep enough, the Terrapins unveiled yet another talented player with the ability to take down the opposition: Sade Wiley-Gatewood.
Wiley-Gatewood scored eight of her career-high 17 points during a 25-6 first-half run, and Maryland rolled past Marist, 86-60, last night to win the Terrapin Classic.
Marissa Coleman scored 15 points, and Crystal Langhorne and Kristi Toliver had 11 apiece for the Terrapins (15-0). The defending national champions have won 21 straight, the longest active streak in the nation.
Maryland shot 63 percent and had five players score in double figures.
Meg Dahlman led Marist (9-4) with 12 points.
Wiley-Gatewood was playing in her third game with the Terrapins after sitting out a year following her transfer from Tennessee.
"Sade brings so much to the table with the way she defends, the way she's unselfish and shoots the ball," Maryland Coach Brenda Frese said.
· GEORGE WASHINGTON 76, SAN DIEGO ST. 42: Kimberly Beck and Kenan Cole scored 13 points apiece for the No. 17 Colonials, who won the Surf 'N Slam championship game in San Diego.
GW (11-2), which is enjoying its best start since 1995, outscored the Aztecs 30-6 in the final 12 minutes of the first half to take a 39-17 halftime lead. The Colonials shot 59.1 percent from the floor while holding San Diego State (7-4) to 27.3 percent shooting.
Beck was named the tournament most valuable player and was joined on the all-tournament team by teammate Sarah-Jo Lawrence.
· GEORGETOWN 60, UTAH 57: Katrina Wheeler helped the Hoyas match their win total from last season by scoring 16 points in the team's victory at McDonough Arena.
Wheeler was one of four players to score in double figures for Georgetown (10-4), which won for the third time in its last four games. Kristin Heidloff had 11 points, and Kate Carlin and Aminata Diop each added 10. Marie Warner had 18 points for the Utes (7-6).
· DREXEL 61, AMERICAN 58: The Eagles (5-9) failed to overcome a 14-0 early run by the Dragons (4-7) at Bender Arena. Liz Hayes scored 19 points to lead three players in double figures for American. Gabriela Marginean scored 15 points for Drexel.
